SEAI calls on clubs and charities to seize retrofit funding
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) is urging sports clubs, charities, and cultural organisations to capitalise on millions of euro available through retrofit grants, after €25 million was distributed in 2024. The schemes represent a major opportunity to cut energy bills and meet sustainability commitments.
A recent project by the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind illustrates the potential impact. Working with SE Systems, the charity completed a €330,000 retrofit that delivered more than 20% in energy savings while improving comfort for staff, clients, and even the guide dogs themselves. Through blended financing—combining SEAI support with partner contributions—the charity’s direct outlay was reduced to just €19,000. Payback was achieved in under a year.
The case highlights how retrofits have become not only an environmental imperative but also a financial necessity. For organisations facing tight budgets, energy upgrades lower overheads, strengthen resilience, and enhance facilities, creating immediate and lasting value.
Despite the benefits, take-up remains uneven. Many organisations lack awareness of the grants available or the confidence to undertake large-scale retrofits. SEAI’s challenge is to ensure greater engagement before opportunities are missed.
As energy prices remain volatile and sustainability expectations intensify, momentum for retrofits is set to grow. For those willing to act, the path to long-term savings and resilience is not just possible but actively supported by national policy.
