Casting our minds back to the Facilities Management Awards 2026, held last 11th March at the Radisson Blu, Royal Convention Centre, Dublin, Johnson & Johnson Vision Limerick's win of the Excellence in Sustainability - In House award stood as one of the evening's most impressive demonstrations of what sustainability leadership looks like when it is pursued with both ambition and rigour at a major manufacturing scale.

The achievement that defined the submission is striking in its clarity: achieving 100% renewable electricity five years ahead of the target set by Johnson & Johnson's global net-zero ambition. For a manufacturing site of this scale, with the energy demands that advanced optics production entails, that outcome represents a significant operational and strategic accomplishment. It is the kind of result that does not happen through aspiration alone but through ISO 50001-certified energy management, disciplined project execution, and a sustained programme of innovation that includes heat recovery systems, electrification projects, and the deployment of digital tools such as the Energy Control Tower for real-time energy performance monitoring.

What made the submission particularly compelling to the judging panel was the way these technical achievements are matched by a genuinely embedded sustainability culture. The WeSustain employee engagement programme has brought sustainability from the boardroom to the shop floor, creating an environment where the people working within the facility understand, contribute to, and take ownership of the site's sustainability goals. That grassroots dimension is often the missing piece in corporate sustainability programmes; at Johnson & Johnson Vision Limerick, it is a deliberate and evidenced part of the strategy.

The site's stewardship of a 95-acre biodiversity hub adds a further dimension to a sustainability programme that extends well beyond energy management and emissions reduction. Biodiversity, alongside energy efficiency and decarbonisation, reflects a holistic understanding of what responsible manufacturing within a built and natural environment demands.

The Facilities Management Awards 2026 recognised in Johnson & Johnson Vision Limerick a site that is not simply meeting sustainability targets but redefining what in-house sustainability leadership can achieve, with lasting impact for Irish manufacturing and the communities surrounding it.
